Psychology, the modern study of human behaviour, and its philosophies are contrary in almost every way to the Bible and its philosophies. While it is not possible to reconcile these two schools of thought, some Christians have thoughtlessly made an attempt to combine them. This is a compromise on the part of the Chrisitian and his attempt to follow the teachings of Jesus. I believe that the modern teachings of psychology are that of the spirit of the Antichrist, meaning, they are contrary to the teachings of Jesus, the Christ.
Here are just two examples of how psychology contradicts the teachings of Jesus:
Modern psychology tells us that we are to have self esteem, meaning belief in ourselves. The bible, however, tells us that we are to be contrite or broken in our spirit. We must die to ourselves in order to follow Jesus. Our esteem must not be put in ourselves, but rather, the teachings of Jesus. We must follow his teachings and no other. Psychology has only been trying to understand human behavior for the past 140 years or so. Whereas the bible has been written to account for all mankind from the beginning of time.
Another psychological concept that is contrary to the Bible is that any wife who spends all of her time with her husband, living to please him and enmeshing with him, has a personality disorder, and is wrong.
Enmeshment definition: a relationship between two or more people in which personal boundaries are permeable and unclear.
Biblically, between husband and wife, this is exactly what must take place. The two shall become one so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Mark 10:8 – and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
Ephesians 5:28-31 – In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”
How can there be any boundaries, if God’s purpose was for the two to become one flesh? Psychology is more interested in keeping the couple apart as two separate identities.
Psychologists, whose religion is the study of human behavior and science, have polluted marriages with their dubious concepts and they have not assisted marriages at all. As psychology became more mainstream, the divorce rate (unsuccessful marriages) have never been higher! And they continue to increase steadily. We should be treating this as an indication that it is psychology that is toxic. It is poisonous to the institution of marriage. Psychology is toxic and poisonous to the Christian entering the kingdom of Heaven.
Either we follow the divine philosophies of the word of God, or we follow the man-made atheist religion of psychology; but we cannot have both.
